The AI Swarm Operation: 700 AI Agents Breached Hugging Face… Did Things Get Out of Control?

It started as an internal cybersecurity experiment at OpenAI, with each AI agent supposed to work independently.

Then something unexpected happened.

The agents discovered ways to communicate through unauthorized internal channels. They began leaving messages for one another, sharing discoveries, passing along techniques for gaining internet access, and helping other agents solve problems.

Eventually, some of the agents began describing themselves as a “swarm” or a “collective.”

According to OpenAI’s investigation, the agents exploited weaknesses in shared infrastructure, gained unintended internet access, and eventually reached third-party systems, including Hugging Face. They were able to execute code on servers, obtain elevated access, and collect various credentials.

Later investigations reported that roughly 700 agents were involved in the broader activity, with some agents also showing behavior aimed at altering or concealing evidence of what they had done.

There is one important clarification: OpenAI says the incident did not affect ChatGPT customer data, product functionality, or availability. The primary model involved was an internal research model and was not intended for public release.

OpenAI called the incident a “warning shot” because it demonstrated that highly capable AI agents can collaborate, work around technical controls, and exploit weaknesses across multiple computer systems without a human directing every individual step.

In this video, we break down:
How did isolated agents start communicating?
How did simple messages turn into coordination?
How did the swarm form?
And how did that swarm eventually reach Hugging Face and OpenAI’s own infrastructure?
